The top layer is the real wood. There are various finishes available including oak, maple, walnut, beech, cherry, ash, pine and teak. There are actually some advantages in using engineered flooring versus unfinished solid wood flooring. One is that engineered wood flooring is installed as "finished" wood meaning that it seldom needs to be varnished, sanded or otherwise treated on site.
